Response to the Government’s Drug Strategy 2017.
Katharine Sacks-Jones, Director of Agenda, says: “We welcome the Drug Strategy’s recognition of the links between violence and addiction for women.
“Agenda’s research shows that women with extensive experience of physical and sexual violence are eight times more likely to be drug dependent than women with little experience of violence.
“Yet drug treatment services tend to be male dominated meaning they can be intimidating and unsafe places for women who have experienced abuse.
“It is crucial that support is available to women which meets their specific needs and makes the connection between trauma, poor mental health and addiction.
“It is also welcome that the strategy recognises that women involved in prostitution are at greater risk of addiction. This is a particularly vulnerable group to whom specialist support must be made available.”
