Response to Office of National Statistics data on drug-related deaths.
Katharine Sacks-Jones, Director of Agenda, says: “It is shameful that drug-misuse deaths among women are the highest they have been since records began.
“Women who are dependent on drugs have often experienced extensive physical and sexual abuse. They are at risk of poverty, homelessness and poor mental health.
“These are women who need help. But currently drug treatment services, often dominated men, can be intimidating and sometimes unsafe places for women who have experienced abuse.
“It is crucial that women get support that takes into account their specific needs so that they can address the root causes of their addiction and rebuild their lives”
