Sara began as a youth worker in Salford before undertaking her PhD at the University of Manchester. From 2001- 2007 she was Principal Research Officer/Head of Research at Barnardo’s and directed a three year research programme on the sexual exploitation of young people. Since 2007 Sara has been co-director of DMSS Research. In 2011-12 she was seconded to the National Centre for Social Research as Head of their Children and Young People team. Outside her work Sara spent 13 years as a Rape Crisis counsellor and trainer and 10 years as a part-time foster carer.
